Spring Check: How to prepare optimally for the Zurich City Triathlon

With the first warmer days, the decisive phase of the season preparation begins for many triathletes. Spring is the ideal time to check your equipment, test routines, and prepare step by step for the race.

ZC3 defending champion Fabian Meeusen has shared some practical tips on how you can make the most of the coming weeks.

Check your equipment early
A thorough equipment check is one of the most important parts of your preparation. Your bike in particular should be in perfect condition before your first more intensive training sessions. Check the brake pads, tires, and gears and make sure everything works reliably. You should also test your running shoes and other gear early on – this helps you avoid unpleasant surprises shortly before the race.

Test your race nutrition
What works on race day should be tested beforehand. Use your training sessions to try different nutrition options – for example gels, bars, or carbohydrate-based drinks. This helps you find out what you like and what your body tolerates well. Well-planned nutrition can make a decisive difference during the race.

Optimize your aero position
The bike course of the Zurich City Triathlon is fast and flat – which means an aerodynamic position can make a big difference. More ambitious athletes can test during training whether an aero handlebar makes sense for them and how they can optimize their position on the bike. A compact position saves energy and can provide additional speed.

Test your wetsuit in training
Swimming also deserves some preparation. Try your wetsuit during training so you can get used to the feeling in the water. At the same time, you will be prepared in case the water in June turns out to be a bit colder than expected.

Practice mount & dismount
Especially in shorter distances, seconds can make the difference. Practice getting on and off your bike quickly with clip-in pedals. A simple method: mark a temporary line on the ground during training and simulate the mount and dismount line from the transition zone.

Don’t forget to enjoy it
Despite all the preparation, remember that the joy of movement should always come first. Not every training session has to be perfect – what matters is that you stay motivated and enjoy your training time. With the right balance of preparation and enjoyment, progress usually comes naturally.

With these tips, you’ll be well prepared for the coming weeks of training – and for your start at the Zurich City Triathlon. 🏊🚴🏃
